Is It Time to Take a Break?

caregiver respiteMany caregivers care for others because it is their passion.  They feel a sense of fulfillment and typically say they receive as much or more than they give.  Others become caregivers due to circumstances, such as when a family member sustains an illness or injury.  Whatever the situation, all people performing regular, ongoing caregiving occasionally need a break to maintain their own health and energy levels.

Unfortunately, many caregivers deny the need for such a pause and resist the suggestion that they get away for a bit. Consider for a moment that such breaks are referred to as respites–-brief intervals of rest and recovery between periods of exertion.  Caregivers would do well to note that by definition a respite is brief and not a frivolous waste of time.  Rest and recovery are essential needs for physical, psychological, and emotional well-being if they are to continue to exert themselves as caregivers.

The Alzheimer’s Association is a comprehensive resource for all caregivers, not just those dealing with dementia.  This page from the website explains the types of respite care available, why it is so critical, and how to overcome guilt and other concerns caregivers have caring for themselves.  Caregivers not only deserve a summer vacation just like everyone else, they need it!
